About
BEAVER TRAKS RECORDING
Beaver Traks Recording,
located in Beaverdam, Va. (hence the name), originally
began as my personal project studio in the late 80’s. I’m a
veteran bassist, both up-right and electric, who teaches orchestra
and has performance experience from biker bars to concert halls,
with studio playing thrown in as well. I also write songs, and
with the advent of affordable recording equipment and my
unmitigated gear obsession, I decided to create my own studio to
save me some bucks (HA!) while recording my tunes. Armed with my
trusty Yamaha 4 track, one of my first projects was a demo for my
band. This was generally well received by agents and clients
alike.
In my involvement with local school systems it became evident to
me that there was a lack of quality concert recording available to
directors of large ensembles. I bought a matched set of Neumann
km184’s, a decent pre, and a DAT recorder, and started recording
these events. This was the birth of my passion for
live-to-two-track stereo recording, which I continue to refine to
this day. As my experience developed along with the technology
spiral of the 90’s, I turned to more high-quality multi-track
recording, mixing and mastering. Pretty soon I decided that this
could be a pretty good night and weekend gig: it was fun, cool,
and bleeding-edge-techno intensive. I soon found that there was a
market niche for musicians who wanted to make records but (1)
couldn’t afford the high-priced studios in the area and (2) were
intimidated by the pro studio vibe. So around 1994 Beaver Traks
was born and has been going strong ever since. I’ve recorded band
demos, artist CDs, live gospel shows, hundreds of concerts,
audition CDs, dance edits, music beds, even lectures and
competitions, in so many different genres: rock, classical, funk,
bluegrass, gospel, country, punk, alternative; it never gets
boring. If and when it does, I’ll quit. (I can always get a job
that’s boring; it ain’t gonna involve music.)
My goal is to provide a very high quality audio product at a fair
and affordable price, in a professional, relaxed, caring
environment, by a musician and artist who knows good sound and how
to capture it. I do make a few (a very few) extra bucks, which
usually get pumped right back into the studio. But at the end of
the day I do this because I love it. It provides me with a techno
outlet for my geeky side and a creative outlet for my artistic
side.
The bottom line: this is not a business designed as corporate
entity with an eye solely on the making money. Beaver Traks is an
outgrowth of my passion for music, recorded sound, and a desire to
provide a service for other like-minded artists.

take a walk and I’ll show you.
